Reviews:

"SONIC IMAGES HAS CHOSEN THE BEST MATERIAL FROM ITS HISTORY... THERE IS SOME VERY
ENJOYABLE MATERIAL TO BE FOUND HERE."

It's not all that unusual for record labels that regularly produce albums of film and television music to eventually
compile some of their best material on a compilation. The Sonic Images label, sustained in the late 1990s by its
immensely popular albums for the cult sci-fi show "Babylon 5," has produced more television score albums than
perhaps any other label. Although specializing in fantasy and sci-fi music for TV, the label has also produced the
albums for mainstream shows and mini-series such as "Chicago Hope" and "Lonesome Dove." Unlike previous
Sonic Images compilations devoted to re-recordings of adventure themes or retrospects of a single composer
(i.e. Mark Snow, James Horner, etc), this PRIME TIME album of 2000 features only original performances of
television themes and a few select cuts from various shows' underscores.

SONIC IMAGES PRIME TIME serves mostly as a sampler of the best material taken from already existing Sonic
Images albums. In fact, there's nothing new to be found on this album. For the most part, Sonic Images has
chosen the best material from its history, but that's not to say that all of it is either good, or functions well with the
rest of the music on the album. Drawbacks of the album include some of the music that never impressed me
previously, including "Pacific Blue," "Poltergeist," and "Conan." At the same time, there is some very enjoyable
material to be found here. Main titles for "Chicago Hope" and "The Sentinel" are popular choices for fans of Mark
Isham and James Newton Howard, respectively. Jeff Rona's excellent New Hope track from "Chicago Hope"
appears here. Jay Gruska's "Lois & Clark" provides a few good tracks. Basil Poledouris' "Lonesome Dove" is a
long-time favorite.

Even with these good selections, however, the album suffers from a lack of cohesiveness. Two tracks should
have been eliminated immediately; Christopher Franke's "Pacific Blue" is out of place, and Evan H. Chen's
"Crusade" has been bashed by every critic (and angry, lingering "Babylon 5" fans) to an almost unanimous
degree. Upon listening to it again, I still marvel at the choice of Chen to score that spin-off. What were they
thinking? Anyways, the rest of the material on PRIME TIME conflicts; "Lonesome Dove," as good as it may be,
simply cannot exist next to the quirky end credits for "Earth: Final Conflict." And then, of course, there are the
two tracks from "Babylon 5." The departure of the show from TNT has caused a void in the quality TV sci-fi scene,
and Franke's music -- once in the spotlight -- seems now to have faded away. The two main title cues provided
here are arguably his best of the five seasons, but they offer nothing for the die hard "Babylon 5" fans to salivate
about when looking at the album. Perhaps it would have been well-suited to throw in a teaser of new episodic
material to help sell the album.

The reason I would have recommended more "Babylon 5" music on this album is because of the simple fact that
Sonic Images just isn't getting as much big press as it used to. It would be a blunder to let another year pass
before releasing a third and final compilation of the best "Babylon 5" themes and suites, taking advantage of that
huge crowd of fans before the memories of the show slip too far from mind. In the meantime, the PRIME TIME
sampler contains some good material -- especially if you're a big fantasy TV show fan -- but the listening
experience is disjointed as a whole. The album suffers from poor packaging and arrangement. It is very difficult
to determine from the outside of the packaging what exactly is included on the album -- there is no straight track
listing with times provided. Also, with two or three selections from each show on the album, it would have been far
better to combine them into sections of their own to assist the flow of the listening experience. As is, it jumps in
style far too many times for an hour of music. **

"THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM..."

The folks at Sonic Images Records have gathered their television show composers together to create a sampling
of some of the most popular television show music from the past decade or so. With 21 individual tracks, SONIC
IMAGES PRIME TIME: Original Television Music features themes and songs from "The Outer Limits," "The
Sentinel," "Pacific Blue," "Raven," "Poltergeist: The Legacy," "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman,"
"Chicago Hope," "Lonesome Dove," "Conan,", "Crusade," "Babylon 5" and "Earth: Final Conflict."

In particular, a newly remixed theme featuring the opening voice from "The Outer Limits" gets a jazzy conversion
followed by the catchy main theme. "Just Another Day In LA" written by Christopher Franke from "Pacific Blue" is
extremely catchy and two selections of the main theme from seasons two and five of "Babylon 5," which he
composed as well are also included as is Even H. Chen's opening title music from "Crusade."

Other noteworthy titles include the beautiful main theme from "Lonesome Dove" and the heroic opening to "Lois
& Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman." Overall, this is a great CD for consumers who like the themes and
other music from these television programs, but may be hesitant to buy the individual soundtrack album CDs for
each. Available on CD only, SONIC IMAGES PRIME TIME will carry a suggested retail price of $15.97 and can
be ordered directly from the Sonic Images Records Website. The street date is September 26, 2000.

"THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE HERE..."

SONIC IMAGES PRIME TIME, released on September 26, is a sampler from the considerable number of American
TV sho scores available on this label. There is something for everyone here, with dance-oriented tracks like "The
Outer Limits" Remix, Techo-Legacy from "Poltergeist - The Legacy" and "Lois & Clark" Extended Remix; to more
serious fare like Basil Poledouris' Main Title from "Lonesome Dove." Of course Christopher Franke is well
represented with two of his Main Titles from "Babylon 5," his Main Theme from "Pacific Blue" and two themes from
"Raven." Of the more celebrated composers represented, we have Mark Isham's Main Title from the second
season of "Chicago Hope" and James Newton Howard's Theme from "The Sentinel." Other shows represented are
"Conan," "Crusade" and "Earth: Final Conflict."

"A NIFTY LITTLE TRIP DOWN RECENT-MEMORY LANE..."

Sonic Images has released PRIME TIME, a CD with the theme music from 12 television series, including such SF
shows as "Babylon 5," "Crusade," "Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict," "Outer Limits," "Poltergeist," and
"Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." I've heard it, and it's a nifty little trip down recent-memory
lane for SF addicts.

"...SHEER GENIUS"

I wanted to thank Sonic Images for the recent releases featured on my radio program, Close To The Edit. My
listeners are going bonkers over SONIC IMAGES PRIME TIME, especially the "Outer Limits - Remix." This and
your recent Earthtone releases are garnering alot of support from my audience. Just sheer genius.

This Halloween, we'll be having a special radio promotion featuring the music of "The Outer Limits" and
"Poltergeist - The Legacy" soundtracks to keep with the spooky mood of the night. Most of the evening will be
involved with the darker, scarier and sometimes funky end of the music. Thanks again!

"...A GOOD SAMPLING"

This compilation can best be described as "syndicated music" much of which comes from series that have no
real "network" home, such as "The Outer Limits," "Pacific Blue" and "Babylon 5." Most of the music reflects the
"non-network" feel by being somewhat synth-based/influenced with the occasional acoustic/orchestral track,
such as Basil Poledouris' "Lonesome Dove," popping up here and there. This is where this latest compilation
from Sonic Images falters since the tracks have a tendency to run together, and nothing really stands out as
fantastic. There are some re-mixes of current themes that make a special appearance on this CD from "The
Outer Limits" and the cancelled "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" series which are nice variations
on the originals.

Sonic Images, unlike the bigger labels, Hollywood Records, Universal, RCA and Varese Sarabande, doesn't have
the same type of access (or may be willing to get it) to bigger blockbuster "name" projects. This hampers the
allowable selections from their library for a compilation, but they manage to get a reasonable one out anyhow.
This is not to say that SI is a budget label, that's reserved already for Laserlight, but SI has been willing to take
chances with novel concept releases like the episodic "Babylon 5" series, which have been a hit and are
represented by two tracks on this release. I would wish more series that have a following such as B5 would think
to follow in the same vein. GNP made a small attempt with several "Star Trek" projects, but SI has been the best
with following through.

For the TV music fan, notably for the series represented, this compilation offers some items that were the
highlights of previous albums. I found myself getting into the "Lois & Clark Theme Remix" by Jay Gruska (I
thought the original theme for the series was great, which appears three tracks later) and, being a fan of
"Lonesome Dove," I found the there's appearance here worth a listen again. Upon listening to the "Chicago Hope"
theme here again, I found that TV networks have a tendency for copying and "groupthink" and make note that it
has an "E.R."-ish quality or vice-versa (trust me, it's actually quite funny upon a listen to both). For folks that
aren't as familiar with the series or the composers on the album, I wouldn't expect this CD to be in your hands at
the checkout. Syndicated TV is a good way for composers to get a good and solid start (and for some, back on
their feet), and this CD offers a good sampling from that area of television work.

"A COLLECTION OF SOME OF THE FINEST NAMES IN TELEVISION COMPOSING..."

"Prime Time" in America is the television evening's first hour of entertainment, usually including some of the best
programming available. For this CD release, Sonic Images manages to snare a lion's share of that entertainment.

This compilation gathers the highlights of the label: "Babylon 5," "Earth: Final Conflict," "Poltergeist - The Legacy,"
"Lois & Clark," "The Sentinel." There are two advantages to this album. First of all, it does not limit itself to a
mere succession of topics, but it alternates between songs, background score and theme music, including many
"alternate" versions of already familiar music. Secondly, it gathers together on the same CD some of the finest
names in television composing, such as James Newton Howard, Mark Isham, Basil Poledouris, Christopher
Franke and Micky Erbe and Marybeth Solomon. Even then, the album does not separate the tracks by composer,
but places in them in an order for the most pleasing listening experience. One can thus start with a remix of "The
Outer Limits" theme, move on to different "Babylon 5" selections and then rebound to music from "Chicago Hope"
or "Conan."

All of the titles present here come from the original soundtrack albums for each series, so no new music is evident
here. The fan having a complete collection will find little use for this album, but those who haven't bough every
Sonic Images release to date or who may just be interested in a sampling of some fine, original TV music will find
SONIC IMAGES PRIME TIME a pleasant addition to their collection.

          Dreams... to Dream
          Autumn 2000

"Prime Time" is a Sonic Images anthology of main themes and background music from a variety of (mostly sci-fi)
oriented TV shows including Babylon 5, Crusade, Chicago Hope, Earth: Final Conflict and Lois & Clark.
The collection comes from existing CDs in Sonic Images' catalogue, most of which are in print, so you can use this
sampler to make a shopping list. I'd personally recommend tracking down Jay Gruska's lively Lois & Clark and the
ambient-Celtic Earth: Final Conflict.
